Year 1 Reflection & Learning Plan

This past year has been one of the most memorable years of my life. It has brought me new challenges, new friends, new mentors, and so many opportunities for self-improvement both inside and outside of the classroom. The number one aspect of the program that surprised me this past year was how the course material continues to build on prior material. In other words, one cannot simply study for an exam by memorizing material and expect to flourish in future courses. Each course is designed to incorporate material from prior courses and semesters with the expectation that the student knows the information from previous courses. This is a completely new line of thinking with comparison to my undergraduate education. Skills and knowledge from semester one repeatedly reappears in semester three, and so on. This has taught me a precious lesson; since there is so much material delivered in each course, I have to focus on the big picture. It is not realistic to commit every piece of information delivered to me into long term memory. I have to reason and tease out information and skills that are most imperative and need to be committed to long term memory, and those that can be familiarized and looked up when needed. It is easy to lose sight of the big picture, which is that my main goal is to become the best clinician possible. Thus, it is essential that I be able to pull information and skills forward as I continue my journey through PT school.
