Health Condition: Thoracic Compression Fracture

 

  • Roughly 700,000 osteoporotic fractures of the thoracic and lumbar spine reported annually
    • Most commonly in thoracolumbar transition zone or mid-thoracic region
    • 1/6 elderly patients had incidental vertebral fracture on lateral chest x-ray performed in ED according to one study
    • Prevalence of osteoporosis-related vertebral compression fractures increases with age:
      • About 25% of postmenopausal women > 50 years old
      • About 40% of women ≥ 80 years old
      • 22% prevalence of vertebral fractures found in patients with Crohn’s Disease

 

 

  • Risk Factors:
    • Osteoporosis & osteopenia
    • Female sex
    • History of fractures in adulthood
    • Older age
    • Fall history
    • Dementia & depression
    • Caucasian
    • Tobacco and alcohol use
    • Early menopause and estrogen deficiency
    • Vitamin D and calcium deficiency
    • Prolonged corticosteroid use
