This fall I came across the article “The Itch” by Atul Gawande.  This article takes the reader through the experience and thought process of a practitioner working with patients who have chronic pain.  It explores important aspects of the patient and an important aspect of medicine’s changing reaction to these cases.   As I can’t provide a video or other physical evidence of my time with patients suffering from chronic pain, I’m providing this article.  When I read it, I immediately identified with the struggles of these patient cases.  His article explains the multi-faceted nature of patient’s brain mapping, the interaction between emotional, situational, and physical pain, and the need for forward thinking practitioners to provide the full spectrum of care necessary for recovery.  I feel this is an excellent example of the thrills and challenges of working with patients suffering from chronic pain and displays the level of professional management required.
