The most surprising development in my experience this past year has been discovering my love of outpatient physical therapy.  During my first clinical internship I was in an outpatient department of Johns Hopkins Hospital.  My favorite patient population was treating those suffering from chronic pain.  Working with these patients involved exploring the altered perceptions of their body and attempting to corral them back towards a more functional perception.   It was fascinating work.  From the initial evaluation to our final session it was imperative to continually reassess, to be aware of all social and environmental influences on the patient, and to set small goals to maintain patient motivation.  The patients I worked with demanded attention from every part of my PT brain.
