MHA@GWU Immersion: Organization Research Project and Portfolio Presentation
My Development:
During Immersion 1, we took the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and I was typed as ENTJ, however, I thought I was INFP after reading all of the type category descriptions. Now, after a year and an EQ-i assessment, I think that the ENTJ type is accurate. Some parts of this type that stand out to me are (natural strengths and challenges):
- Extravert: Think out loud; Can dominate conversations and interactions.
- iNtuitor: Imaginative and futuristic; able to see and speak about trends, complexity and patterns; Seduced and compelled by irrelevant complexity and patterns.
- Thinker: Tell it like it is; can seem overly blunt.
- Judger: Speak easily and often about schedules, opinions and decisions; Can be overbearing.
For this immersion, we discussed the interaction between MBTI type and our emotional intelligence EQ-i scores. In summary, one's MBTI type indicates their hardwired preferences, therefore it is unlikely to change over time. In contrast, a person's EQ-i score indicates their behavior which can be informed by type, but is more flexible which changes occuring over time as a person enhances their skills in the different qualities. When I took the test, I had high scores in self-perception and decision making and low scores in emotional expression and interpersonal relationships. I understand that all of the EQ-i qualities contribute to an individual's success as a leader. Therefore, I will be working to improve my lowest scores including:
- Interpersonal Relationships: Practice gratitude by acknowledging and expressing appreciation for others.
- Emotional Expression: Verbalize feelings in conversation - "I'm afraid this course of action is not going to work."
- Independence: Continuously note to self how and where ideas and opinions differ from others around.
- Empathy: Reflect on times that I have been taken care of, served or helped by others, then pay it forward.
Overall, I am glad that we studied the MBTI and EQ-i because these characteristics have made me more cognizant of how I am perceived by others. Also, I like knowing what I parts of my emotional intelligence need work so that I can be mindful in my self-improvement.
This immersion also marked the end of the MHA program. I enjoyed being able to see many of my classmates in person and to hear about their work within the program and their careers. I think I made some lasting friendships and look forward to seeing what everyone accomplishes in the future.
