Plan of Action for Increasing Cultural Competency

 

By the end of Spring ’15 semester-

  1. 1.       Increase presence at SALUD (next meeting April 1)
  2. 2.       Develop bilingual paperwork for the following:
    1. PT Review of systems
    2. PT subjective history
  3. 3.       Determine student interest in bilingual mini-practical practice on campus (Survey Monkey)
  4. 4.       Determine student interest in mission trips abroad
  5. 5.       Determine student interest in Italian clinical opportunity

Summer ’15 semester:

  1. 1.       Pending interest, begin regular interval “Components of a practical” events on campus
  2. 2.       Develop working relationship with health science students regarding possible desire to open up other Cultural Competency experiences to their students as well
  3. 3.       Develop bilingual paperwork for the following:
    1. Common special tests and measures
    2. Neurorehabilitation

Fall ’15 semester -

  1. 1.       Set date for translator educational experiences (verbal language and ASL) (childrens’ hospital for language services department)
  2. 2.       Develop relationships with St. Mary’s College and Elon University programs regarding mission tripsà Set dates for first group of GW students to join these programs on their global missions (Winter 2015- Spring 2016- Summer 2016)
  3. 3.       Develop bilingual paperwork for the following:
    1. a.      Medical imaging
    2. b.      More special tests and measures
    3. c.       Prosthetics and Orthotics

Spring ’16 semester:

  1. 1.       Develop bilingual paperwork for the following:
    1. a.      Pediatrics
    2. b.      Cardiopulmonary conditions
    3. c.       Integumentary conditions

Summer ’16 semester-

  1. 1.       Develop bilingual paperwork for the following:
    1. a.       Women’s health

Global Programs- Details

- Elon University

              - Variety of international locations including:

                             a. Italy

                             b. Australia

                             c. Belize

                             d. Belgium

                             e. Ghana

- Director for Global Learning Opportunities program for DPT program has been very enthusiastic in offering to allow GW students to join the Elon students, and assist GW in creating their own mission site, if we are interested in doing that.

 

-University of Saint Mary

              -Regular participation with the Haiti Rehab Project listed below

             

University of Kentucky

-“Shoulder to Shoulder Global” -   Ecuador

-Inter-professional medical mission

-Centro Medico Hombro a Hombro (CMHH)- est. in 2007, outside of Santo Domingo. Clinic is open year round, and primarily supported financially by UK health brigades (students, staff and faculty)

-3 Trips a year, totally about 130 student volunteers

-Trips in March (14-22), May (15-24), and August (7-16) this year

 

-  Health Volunteers Overseas

              -Variety of locations, only one available to students: Bolivia 3rd yrs only, 2-4 wks              

 

 

 

Haiti Rehab Project

 

-          “We are a non-profit organization whose mission is to support rehabilitation and medical clinics, orphanages, families, and outreach programs for those with special needs in Haiti.”

  1. Bring donated and buildable assistive devices (made from PVC pipes!)
  2. Haitian coffee sales (could be a fundraiser?)
  3. Care Packages

 

 

 

Eduglobal Associates

 

-Based out of Indiana University of Pennsylvania

-Total cost estimated at $5,000 including airfare and housing for an 8-week internship

-2 Clinical sites:

    1. Tuscan site:  80% SNF,  20% acute inpatient, aquatic therapy available
    2. Umbrian site: 90% acute/inpatient, 10% SNF, aquatic therapy available
    3. Other clinical optional experiences:
      1. Orthopedic surgery observation,
      2. aquatic therapy s/p SCI,
      3. other neurological diagnoses,
      4. cardiopulmonary rehabilitation

-All CIs are proficient in spoken and written English

-Italian facilities prefer students in their 3rd year

-Administration fee to Eduglobal is $750 per student for an 8 week internship (12 week is $950)

-Standard hours CIs work are 35-36, however students are encouraged to do language study for the remaining hours to fill a 40 hour work week.
