My Development:

Diving in to module 3, I had preconceived notions that this was not the module for me. Finance was not my strong suit. I came in with a very basic understanding, having taken accounting courses in the past, but came out with a greater understanding of how the numbers are run, the depth and breadth of an actual departmental budget, and the importance of depreciation of assets.

Developing the budget over the course of this module was very in depth, and meticulous calculations were necessary to ensure the accuracy of the pro forma. I have always been comfortable using excel, but this course helped me to polish my skills related to the various functions within the software. Sorting through the material provided to find the elements of value was not easy, and there was often excess data given. Once weeded out, the necessary information made much more sense and fell in to place.

I appreciated that the pro forma project built on itself each week, and that the value of each weeks piece built my understanding going forward. The project truely became easier as it progressed, because my understanding of the inner workings of the budgets grew. The executive summary at the end of the project brought the realization of the concepts I had learned over the course of this module.

Use the space below to reflect in writing on the knowledge and skills you have gained throughout this module and how they have shaped your perspectives on managing and leading healthcare organizations.
